Gunther developed an interest in professional wrestling at a young age, influenced by taped WWE shows and Japanese wrestling promotions. He began training under Michael Kovac at Wrestling School Austria and made his professional debut on November 19th, 2005. Early in his career, he competed under various ring names, including Big Van Walter and WALTER, across European and Japanese promotions such as Westside Xtreme Wrestling, Big Japan Pro-Wrestling and Pro Wrestling ZERO1.
Gunther achieved significant success on the independent circuit. In wXw, he became a three-time Unified World Wrestling Champion and a four-time wXw World Tag Team Champion. He quickly rose to prominence, defeating Pete Dunne to win the NXT United Kingdom Championship, ending Dunne’s 685-day reign. Gunther held the title for a record-breaking 870 days, defending it against top competitors like Ilja Dragunov and Joe Coffey.
In January 2022, he transitioned to NXT, where his ring name was changed to Gunther. By April 2022, he debuted on SmackDown and captured the Intercontinental Championship, holding it for 666 days—the longest reign in the title’s history. His tenure as champion included notable defences against Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Sami Zayn.
After losing the Intercontinental title at WrestleMania XL, Gunther moved to Raw and won the 2024 King of the Ring tournament by defeating Randy Orton in the final. He then captured the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2024 by defeating Damian Priest. Gunther has since successfully defended the title against top contenders, including Orton, Sami Zayn, and Jey Uso, solidifying his status as a dominant world champion.
